Tips for starting a business

Starting a new business can be a challenging time, even for the most established and experienced businessman. From getting your head around tax, national insurance and accounts to branding your business and forming a dedicated customer base, starting a business is far from easy. Although thousands of people decide to start up their own business each year, an extremely low proportion actually go on to form an established business with a healthy financial turnover. 

Motivation, commitment and enthusiasm are all key ingredients needed when starting up a business. If you lack one or the other, you simply won't succeed. In order for your business to be a success you need to be willing to work 18 hours days and pay yourself the absolute minimum - if you're lazy or greedy, it's highly unlikely your business will succeed. 

There are a number of reasons you may want to start a new business. You might have spotted a gap in the market or you might have developed the latest must-have gadget. Whatever your reasons for starting a business, there are a number of things you need to consider. Key questions to ask include:

- Where will I run the business from?

- What kind of business should I have ie. partnership, sole trader etc?

- Will I need to rent office space?

- Can I fund the business myself or will I need some kind of financial support?

- How long will the business take before it turns over a profit?

It is not until you've come up with realistic answers for these questions that you can actually start to think about setting up your own business. In realistic terms there is no right or wrong person to run a business, however if you're the sort of person who shys away from hard work or hates making difficult decisions then running your own business might not be the best option.
